On January 30 and 31, the I Conference of Experts on Climate Change and Territory in the Iberian Mediterranean was held in Valencia. The event was convened by the University of Valencia following the DANA tragedy on October 29, and it brought together around 70 experts from universities in Catalonia, the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands, Murcia, and Andalusia.
A total of 13 presentations were discussed, at the end of each of which 5 or 6 recommendations were formulated. The outcome of the meeting thus consisted of a set of around one hundred recommendations directed at public authorities and society. These recommendations have been sent by the Rector of the University of Valencia to the regional parliaments of the Mediterranean area and to the Spanish Cortes Generales so that, if deemed appropriate, they may be considered and, where applicable, taken into account in their legislative work and in promoting public action.
As a result of this initiative, the Catalunya Europa Foundation, which participated in the Valencia Conference, proposed to the Parliament of Catalonia to hold a hearing in which these recommendations could be presented. The hearing included the participation of Dr. Javier Martín Vide, geographer and climatologist, emeritus professor at the University of Barcelona who has worked with the IPCC, and Oriol Nel·lo Colom, professor in the Department of Geography at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
